RIP Frank Sinatra

(12 December 1915 - 14 May 1998)

He wasn’t much to look at - beyond the facial scars, he was still plagued with fairly severe acne - but this mouth, with its slight up curve at the corners and its extravagantly rich and wide, slightly jutting lower lip, was beautifully formed, and his eyes - those eyes! - were a little bit wild…
But Frankie had something more than physical presence: when he was onstage, everyone of them [girls], every last one, believed, to the core of her being, that he was singing to her and her alone.

Frank Sinatra, shaving, 1965.

LIFE photographer John Dominis spent weeks with Sinatra in 1965 — the year the singer turned 50 — emerging with one of the most revealing photographic records of any major performer’s private world ever captured on film. From rehearsals in smoke-filled recording studios to Vegas nightclub performances to golf in the Nevada sun to playing with his dog Ringo in his home office to late-night hijinks with his drinking buddies. Virtually every frame Dominis shot makes it clear that, when Sinatra was around, no one else mattered.

“I admire Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet.” — Catherine Deneuve“I always say everyone was lucky enough to be in a Cate Blanchett movie.” — David Fincher“She’s an actress that is not only gifted and talented. Cate Blanchett is above all a brave actress- One has to be brave, for example, to play in A Streetcar Named Desire in Broadway. I really admire her enormously, and I’d really love to resemble her”. — Meryl Streep“I’ve heard the Meryl Streep comparison about Cate Blanchett, and I believe it to be absolutely correct and an extremely adequate thing to say about Cate.” — Kate Winslet“Charlize Theron and Cate Blanchett are very good actresses.” — Jack Nicholson“Cate is part of the heritage of great actresses. She’s a creative person and someone who is not interested in peddling the values of her persona. She brings her own oomph to a part.” — Geoffrey Rush“I love Cate Blanchett! She is one of my favorite actresses.” — Amy Adams“She’s very subtle, yet boiling away inside. And I admire the fact that she’s very private. You need to have that mystery.” — Eva Green, mentioning that Cate is her idol“I will tell you right now, Cate will win the Oscar. She’s the best actor working today. Not actress, actor. Intimidating, in a way, to work with an actor that good.” — George Clooney“You know, I gotta go to the movies. There are so many young kids I don’t know. Cate Blanchett is a good one.” — Denzel Washington“Wow, there are a lot of actors who are so inspiring - Cate Blanchett.” — Marion Cotillard“I love Cate Blanchett. I think she’s phenomenal, so stylish and a really good actress. There’s probably a young female doctor or teacher out there that’d be inspiring, but in terms of people who’re well-known it’d have to be Cate.” — Rachel Weisz“Cate Blanchett is my favourite actress!” — Diane Kruger“The first time I saw Cate was in Elizabeth (1998), and I was just amazed by her intelligence and strength.” — Nicole Kidman

R.I.P. Margarita Carmen Dolores Cansino | October 17, 1918 - May 14, 1987

Rita was so much more than just a queen of the silver screen. Part of her appeal lies in the fact that she was, in real life, the antithesis of a movie star. She wasn’t interested in the trappings of fame. She was a real woman, strong and able to take care of herself, but in search of a happiness that, ultimately, eluded her. Through it all she remained a gentle spirit, a loving mother and friend, and a woman of pride. She participated in life with a boundless passion, and she walked away with few regrets. Rita Hayworth also gave, and continues to give, joy to millions of film lovers the world over. That will never stop…Certainly she has left an inspirational legacy.

- Caren Roberts-Frenzel

“Cate Blanchett is mesmerizing. I don’t know why. It’s beyond my understanding. Why we all want to work with her is she elevates the rest of us. She’s just got some ethereal grace and elegance that’s beyond me, and an acute understanding of human nature. She’s just exquisite. She’s otherworldly.” — Brad Pitt
